The opening of Omega’s first ever flagship boutique in Russia brings James Bond to Red

October 2006

Daniel Craig, fresh off the set of the latest James Bond film, ‘Casino Royale’, was in Moscow on the occasion of the inauguration of Omega’s first ever flagship boutique in Russia. The inimitable master spy, played for the first time by the British star Daniel Craig, took time out from Her Majesty’s Secret Service to walk down the red carpet and into the famous GUM department store where 2000 guests attended the opening party. Mr. Nick Hayek, CEO of the Swatch Group and Mr. Stephen Urquhart, President of Omega, were present to welcome the select number of guests attending the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new exclusive Moscow Boutique.

Craig, and the cast of the 21st 007 adventure, attended the event at GUM which had been transformed into the Casino Royale for the night.  A ‘Behind the Scenes’ exhibition of photographs taken on the set of the film by star photographer Greg Williams offered guests a sneak preview of the action, the villains and the evil plots our hero survives.

Martinis – shaken not stirred – poker tables and glamorous settings made the secret agent feel at home. On this occasion however, Bond did not have to take on his latest opponent, the notorious ‘Le Chiffre’, at the poker table: it is the dashing spy and his watch that caused a stir when he rolled the dice.  True to the film, Bond wore his reliable ally: the Seamaster Professional 300m with the exclusive automatic winding Omega Co-Axial movement. The blue dial imprinted with a wave pattern looks the part in the sophisticated surroundings of a casino but, like Bond himself, the Seamaster is ready to snap into action at any moment.

Though an historic occasion for Omega, the Swiss watchmaker is no newcomer to Russia. Exactly 107 years ago, Omega delivered the official watch of the Riga electric tramway company: a Lepine 18’ LOB. The setting could not be more dramatic. The GUM is housed in a Neo-Russian building built at the end of the 19th century by Alexander Pomerantsev and takes up almost the entire eastern side of the Red Square. Today, the GUM is home to more than one thousand designer and luxury boutiques.

The Moscow opening is the latest of Omega’s flagship boutiques, where clients can expect to see the complete range of watches and jewellery as well as limited edition pieces not seen elsewhere.  In the U.S., clients can visit the Omega flagship boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California.
