Horage Revolution 3 Microreg: the regulation revolution

One of the last great puzzles of timekeeping is how to improve regulation without losing the mechanical integrity of a watch. So, in typical Horage style, the brand set out on an innovative journey...

T

he “Quest to Zero” is what Horage calls this challenge. The key question being how to get regulation as close to zero deviation in timekeeping as possible whilst keeping the watch truly mechanical?

Regulation is an area of watchmaking that is impacted by multiple variables, many of which are beyond the watchmaker’s control. Who’s wearing the watch? How are they wearing it? Where are they wearing it? What environment is it exposed to? None of us operate in a strictly controlled environment: we are all different, and our watches are exposed to a huge variety of conditions that are unique to us.

MicroReg is Horage’s solution to this disconnect between “regulation” and “reality”: it is an all-new, revolutionary technology to simplify, expedite and personalise the regulation of mechanical wristwatches, whilst protecting the true mechanical nature of the product (no quartz, tuning forks or spring drive…).

To achieve this, Horage worked closely with its technology partner Miniswys SA, a spin-off of the Biel-based company Creaholic. Its core technology is based on a miniature actuator designed by legendary innovator Elmar Mock. This miniature actuator requires just two elements: a ceramic and a metal carrier. It requires no coils, magnets or chips inside the watch and very little energy, as its power consumption at standstill is zero. Its service life is almost infinite thanks to the materials used and their processing.

How does it work? Simply put, there is a ‘sleeping watchmaker’ residing inside the watch. When adjustments are needed to the regulating organs of the watch, it can be ‘woken’ to perform adjustments as small as 0.1 second. All this is possible without opening the watch case, and with access to the adjustment tool it can be performed quickly and easily in any location, by anyone with the correct knowledge. This allows for personalised settings and fine adjustment to suit the specific needs of the wearer.

With an ultra-thin mini actuator, tech company Miniswys enabled Horage to produce a mechanical Swiss precision watch with unrivalled accuracy. In the future, any high-quality Swiss watch fitted with a Miniswys actuator can be set forwards or backwards to suit the individual wearer in tenths of a second for each time of day with a simple tap of the finger.

Horage is now introducing the first watch in the world to feature this revolutionary technology, housing the in-house K2 micro-rotor movement with MicroReg technology baked in.
