‘Time is a luxury – so why hide it?’

December 2005

The new Dior collection, Christal, designed by John Galliano the highly flamboyant couture celebrity, has the ‘…feel of a gentleman’s watch, but has rocks that make it unmistakably feminine, sexy.’

Dior

The Christal Collection comprises sixteen watches combining different bezels and bracelets and comes in two sizes 38 and 28 mm. Chronograph or three-hands, the timepieces come in ‘mirror silver grey’, ‘ice white’ or ‘soft pink’ with a choice of silver sun-brushed, white lacquered or white mother-of-pearl dial. The glamorous sparkle is given by the addition of 44 or 48 hand-set diamonds and 23 or 21 sapphire crystals on the unidirectional bezel and one or three rows of specially designed sapphire crystals on the stainless steel bracelet.
John Galliano explains, “If this watch was a person it would be a rock icon. Strong, tough, a mix of masculine edge on the outside, and soft and seductive woman on the inside. This is for the girl who wants to stand out in a crowd, for the leaders of the pack, for the girl on the back of a motorcycle as well as in the blacked out limo. Above all, it should be worn on the wild side.”
The most striking and original feature of this collection is the bracelet. Reflective pyramid-shaped inserts are set into the stainless steel studs and radiate either a silvery or white or pink colour depending on the metalized or enamelled base. The crown and push buttons are also set with these pyramidal elements.
The Christal Collection of watches are equipped with an ETA quartz movement, have a curved sapphire crystal, are water-resistant to 50 metres and are produced in the Dior workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds using Galliano’s designs.
As John Galliano states, “This is a rock n’ roll watch – it’s got the edge and strength of a man, yet the delicacy and sparkle of a woman. This is a watch that is born to be wild, it’s got the attitude that a rock chic needs. Dive into the ocean, or off a stage, with this steel and sapphire crystal watch on your wrist.”
Galliano concludes in his inimitable fashion, “To have time is a luxury – so why hide it? If you’ve got it flaunt it. Now not only will you be on time – you won’t be able to take your eyes off this watch, nor will those who see it.”
