Monaco’s glam and glitter

December 2007

To immerse oneself in glamorous surroundings alongside the jet setters, the beautiful people, French television anchormen and leggy models, just pop down to Monaco during the Monaco Classic Week.
Endless blue sky, the calm azure waters of the Mediterranean, multi-million dollar boats made to measure, beautiful people dressed casually in couture outfits that it obviously took hours for them to prepare, fine jewellery and an abundance of diamond-set watches for the ladies and nautical-themed mechanical timepieces for the men (Hublot if they were trendy and lucky enough to get hold of the latest model) and you have the essence of glam and glitter.

Monaco's glam and glitter

The Monaco Classic Week is a time when ‘La Belle Classe’ yachts and their owners can be seen actually sailing their fabulous works of art, often exact replica vessels from way back when. “Yachting, and more particularly traditional yachting, is a family, with its codes and its history. Each gathering is a fabulous fête, each absence is noted with emotion, every newcomer is welcomed with pleasure.” HRH Prince Albert II, President of the Monaco Yacht Club, said at the opening cocktail of the festivities. And a grand fête it was.
With Hublot participating in the event, the Big Bang was particularly conspicuous on the wrists of many of the participating yachtsmen and the ladies could be seen wearing the diamond-set Big Bang with either all white diamonds around the bezel, a mix of both black and white diamonds, or the most striking of all, the white dialled version with a white leather strap and black diamonds set around the bezel.
Glamour, however, is not solely about what one wears. It is a mixture of poise, personality, and presence and Monaco has all these in abundance. It was fitting therefore that in this important seafaring event attended by Prince Albert, Hublot, whose very origins are linked to the sea, should be present and award one of the latest Big Bangs to the French explorer Jean-Louis Etienne as 2007’s ‘Personality of the Sea’.
