Amazon watch and jewelry sales double

Amazon.com watch and jewelry sales surged more than 100 percent for the second consecutive fiscal quarter, compared to the same three-month period last year.

In its first quarter of fiscal 2006 ended March 31, Amazon.com and its merchant partners sold more than 58,000 styles of jewelry and watches, a company release said. Sales figures for jewelry were not disclosed.

The site allows customers to choose watches and jewelry based on materials, price, seller or designer, along with detailed product specifications about gemstones, settings and metal stamps. It also promotes gifts for special occasions such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

“We're extremely pleased that our strong fourth-quarter momentum continued into 2006,” Amazon.com Jewelry and Watches Vice President Steven Goldsmith said in the release. “We suspect that there were a lot of very happy Valentine's Day celebrations among Amazon.com customers this year.”

Presently, the site highlights its “Top 50” Mother's Day gifts, with options from Movado and TAG Heuer watches showcased alongside classic pearl strands and diamond hoop earrings.
