Patek, the gold standard when it comes to watchmaking, has introduced a redesigned Aquanaut, a Calatrava Travel Time for women, a new women's tonneau shaped Gondolo watch, a rose gold version of its Annual Calendar also for women which was introduced in 2005, a new chronograph with perpetual calendar and a beautiful new platinum version of its popular World Time watch.
Armand Nicolet, from Tramelan, is continuing its tradition of introducing a watch a year with vintage movements with the L07 - 20 Venus 175 movements in white gold, 10 with blue dials and 10 with light grey dials and 120 Venus 188, and the company is decorating the vintage Venus movement in a way that they used to do in their factory 70 years ago. Armand Nicolet has also introduced a new line, tonneau shaped watches called the TM7 and TL7.
Porsche Design is presenting a great new watch, the World Timer which features a GMT function designed and built in Grenchen by Eterna - with this watch, you can check the time in different cities with the rolling timezone indicator, then you can push the second crown and the hour hand on the main watch display jumps to that timezone. Can't get much simpler, or easy to use, than that.
The big news for Eterna is its brand new Caliber 3800: new technology for the engine of the watch. In this new caliber, Eterna is making use of ball bearings, something from their history, which the company claims reduces the forces at work in the movement. Eterna has started to redesign the engine of their watches and the company's engineers will take the ball bearing technology into other areas of movement development.
We know that big is big here in Basel, but for Movado, what was big is now small. The company, to celebrate 60 years of design, debuted the Movado Museum 60mm, a watch 60mm big. You know how some people can look at a big watch and say, “Yeah, but it doesn't look that big”? Well, not here. This is one huge watch, limited to...60 pieces.
Seiko introduced a new line, the Velatura, inspired by yachting. They have a quartz watch with a yachting countdown timer and a kinetic version, called Direct Drive. Very attractive, masculine, sporty watches. Another great new watch is the Spring Drive Chronograph, integrated into the Spring Drive movement. It's fun just to activate the chronograph and watch that sweep second hand. Very impressive.
That's all for today. More tomorrow with photos from our photographer Casey Bayandor.
