Kobold Watch Company announces collaboration with Land Rover

November 2007

The Kobold Watch Company was commissioned by Land Rover to design an exclusive clock for the dashboard of the brand’s premium vehicle, the Range Rover. In addition to the clocks, which will be mounted in the 20th Anniversary Edition Range Rover, a set of his and hers Kobold wristwatches will accompany each vehicle.

The 20th Anniversary Edition Range Rover represents a landmark achievement for the British carmaker, which sells the model for US$145,000. This represents the highest MSRP ever commanded in the U.S. by a serially produced SUV. Much like Land Rover, Kobold enjoys a high renown for rugged and durable luxury products. In fact, the cooperation between the two companies was sparked by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the explorer who acts as a brand ambassador for both companies.

Kobold’s Range Rover 20th Anniversary Edition watches are crafted from aerospace grade titanium featuring a polished, high-gloss finish. The polished titanium cases represent a premium over the case finish of conventional titanium watches, which are usually sandblasted to a matte finish. The watches are powered by modified ETA 2892 movements.

Furthermore, Land Rover also commissioned Kobold to manufacture a series of Land Rover-branded watches, made available only to distinguished retailers and senior Land Rover executives.

Founded in 1999 by then-19-year-old Michael Kobold, the Kobold Watch Company is one of only a small handful of American watch manufacturers. The company produces no more than 2,500 watches per year, most of which are geared towards use by active professionals such as explorers, divers, and military operatives.
