The Swiss luxury sports watch maker has just released a new, limited edition pilot chronograph as part of its broadened Startimer range, which honours some of the great heroes of the Second World War. However, the new watch will only be available on the Mexican market.

Alpina has just presented its new, limited edition wristwatch, the Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date “201st Squadron”. The brand already has a wealth of experience as the official supplier of military and pilots’ watches, so we expect a lot from any new release of a pilots’ model. And the latest addition to its Startimer range does not disappoint, not least because this one comes with a good story, too.

The new chronograph is being released in a limited edition of 201 pieces, paying tribute to the 201st Squadron that took part in the Second World War. The Mexican Expeditionary Air Force’s 201st Squadron was known worldwide as “The Aztec Eagles” during the Second World War. It was made up of 290 volunteer soldiers who took part in the Pacific theatre of the war.

Back then, they were young men in their early 20s. Now between 90 to 94 years young, they are being honoured for having served their country, on the 70s anniversary of their return back home from the war.

In recognition of their services, the veterans were presented with a 201st Squadron Limited Edition watch during a ceremony presided over by a captain of the Mexican Air Force. Commemorating this key date in the history of Mexico, the watch’s back features a P-47, the aircraft used during the fighting. The dial also features an eagle holding by its claws the distinctive tricolour triangle that is the symbol of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force, located inside the counter at 9 o’clock.

This modern aviator chronograph was designed with professional pilots – like the Mexican Air Force veterans – in mind, who fly powerful aircraft and need to make split-second decisions about limits that their aircraft and the human body can withstand.

The watch features three chronograph counters with perfectly legible dials – a defining characteristic of the Alpina Startimer range - that are essential instruments for aviation and which have made the range so popular with pilots all over the world. The 44 mm stainless steel case sports a scratch-proof and reflection-proof sapphire crystal and a large date, again maximizing readability. The kevlar strap perfectly rounds off the military spirit of the watch.

As always with Alpina watches, the 201st Squadron Limited Edition is powered by a movement that is developed, produced and assembled entirely in-house. In this case, the robust AL-372 Swiss high-precision chronograph movement has been called into duty.

The watch is just as much high precision flying instrument as it is a piece of war memorabilia. It is certified and presented in a limited edition gift-box, together with a historical booklet provided by the Mexican Air Force and an engraved stainless steel plaque. The watch, however, is only available on the Mexican market.
