Diamond teeth ornaments a growing fashion in China

October 2003

A private hospital in the east of China, which in August offered on a trial basis diamond teeth decorating services, has been getting even more business than it bargained for, reports the Xinhua news agency. Jiangsu Hefei Medical and Health Club, which is a private hospital mainly serving foreigners and local professionals in the capital of Jiangsu Province, has thus far conducted some 40 diamond operations, said Song Yangchen, a doctor, speaking to Xinhua. To affix the diamonds to the teeth, the doctors activate the enamel and spread a special glue on the teeth, before putting small diamonds on the surface and heating to fasten them. The diamonds were acquired in Switzerland, and range in price from 800 yuan ($97) to 30,000 yuan ($3,630). The largest stones have a diameter of 1.5 millimeters, and can be removed and replaced. According to the doctors at the hospital, the diamonds do not damage teeth, and the process is conducted in an extremely sterile environment to avoid infection. Prior to surgery, the doctors have to decide whether the patient's teeth are sufficiently white, so as to allow the diamonds to achieve maximum brilliance.
