Sponsorship and Emerald Mining in Colombia
In close collaboration with PAZ VIVA (literally : Peace alive), a Non-Governmental Organization lead by Archbishop Gutierrez in Colombia, the Association
Help Us To Help
(in Spanish : Ayudenos a Ayudar)
is involved in social help focusing on Colombia's emerald miners.
Its objectives are threefold :
Teach the young between 15 - 23 years the art of processing emeralds (gemology, faceting and design) ;
Create a social protection fund covering aspects such as retirement and healthcare ;
Develop the entrepreneurship drive and create a cooperative between the different small production miners, in order to achieve the required size for exporting products.
The Association also foresees that part of the sale of products will generate revenue that will render it financially autonomous.
The next meeting of the Association will take place at the International Labor Office (ILO) in Geneva on the 28th of November, 2003. On this occasion the main project concerning the funding for social protection will be presented.
