Everything's coming up roses
Flowers, a perennial favorite for spring fashions, seem to have been dosed with a good soaking of fertilizer as many designers at the recent Coterie show in New York displayed floral motif accessories.
The fashion tradeshow produced by ENK Productions offers a venue for international designers of sportswear, accessories and shoes, to show off their latest collections to retailers. The show, held late October rather than its originally scheduled September date had brisk traffic.
What were buyers most interested in? According to reports, buyers had romance on their mind looking for anything with lace and ruffles. And, of course, what is more feminine than flowers?
Spring 2002 clothing was blooming with tiny floral prints to large, pop-art flowers in lots of colors. In jewelry, this trend transcends into lots of gem-encrusted floral brooches, organic leaf and petal motifs and of course, a bouquet of pastel colored gemstone designs. Moving from flowers to fruit, Coterie exhibitors had fun with 1950s inspired fruit themes showing up on handbags, headbands to footwear.
Noticed in the halls of the show was also the return of 1970s influenced sweat suits in pink and baby blues complete with piping. The resurgence of yellow gold, especially when shown in multi-layered chains and dangly earrings, are just some of the `70s jewelry looks that fit in with this trend.
