Pearl Evolution 2002:
Pearl Chandelier Lights up the New Year
A chandelier of pearly elegance and grace lights up a brand new year at Golay. The masterpiece has been developed for Pearl Evolution, a Golay art project in its sixth year of artistic pursuit.
Designed and handcrafted by French artist Marie Christophe, the Pearl Chandelier comprises a wire framework with one unique grey South Sea pearl at the centre measuring 28mm by 22mm, 101 white South Sea pearls between 9mm and 14mm, and 66 lozenges of mother-of-pearl carved by German artist Bernd Munsteiner. The exquisite Pearl Chandelier has 10 electric candles.
Ms Christophe studied interior architecture and is recognised among prestigious Parisian brands for her creative excellence in developing artistic yet functional wireworks. She is known for her skill to turn the commonplace iron wires into infinite creative possibilities.
The Pearl Chandelier will go on a world tour in art galleries, exhibitions, and international jewellery fairs, starting at the World Watch & Jewellery Show at Basel, Switzerland from April 4 to 11, 2002.
Pearl Evolution, commissioned by Golay in 1997, is a non-commercial endeavour to explore the possibilities of pearls in the realm of art. Peter Fischer, head of the pearl division at Golay, said: “As a pearl leader, Golay has the duty and the honour to broaden the horizons of the pearl world to beyond pearl jewellery.”
In the five past years, pearls of high quality and rare beauty were supplied to 16 reputable artists who participated in this annual project developing inspiring art objects around the pearl.
