This pocket watch embodies that most ingenious of antique astronomical instruments, the astrolabe. The curving lines on the dial represent the cardinal points and the heights above and under a given latitude (here 46° N.: Geneva). Yellow gold bands indicate the excentric ecliptic with the Zodiac signs and the concentric annual calendar. The hour hand thus simultaneously shows the hour, date, astrological house in which the sun is located, its height and the times at which it rises and sets : dawn and dusk.
