Mido celebrates Ocean Star's 80th anniversary with new 39mm model

Sporty yet slimmer, the 39mm diameter is a first for this collection, clearly illustrating the brand’s ambition to make this model one of the thinnest in its category. The new timepiece honours Mido’s legendary mastery as a pioneer in the field of water resistance, upholding its legacy since 1944.

M

ido has unveiled what is undeniably its most versatile Ocean Star model, a sporty, reliable and chic companion for any escape. Its perfect 39 mm diameter, a first for this collection, is combined with a beautifully slender case for the Ocean Star. Its screw-down case back features the famous starfish motif, the emblem of Mido’s historic expertise in water-resistance, now celebrating its 80th year.

Screw-down crown, white Super-LumiNova, stainless steel, Nivachron™ balance spring for the Caliber 72, interchangeable bracelet with “diver” extension: these materials and cutting-edge technologies firmly place the Ocean Star 39 in the highest tier. Its aesthetic is defined by its unique and distinctive relief dial – evoking the movement of the currents across the sand. In gradients from black to navy blue – colours echoed on the unidirectional rotating bezel with aluminium ring – its face surprises at every glance, inviting the wearer to explore the elements and venture into other dimensions.

In 1944, Mido registered the name “Oceanstar”, with its visionary starfish emblem, a designation synonymous with high performance and remarkable reliability underwater. The Swiss watch brand had already demonstrated its expertise in water-resistance in the 1930s, with the invention of its ingenious cork crown gasket system, named Aquadura. In 1953, the brand also filed an international patent for its Superwatertest, a new device designed to check the water-resistance of watches. 1961 marked a turning point: Mido proved its ability to innovate once again with the Ocean Star Decompression Timer (Rainbow). Water-resistant up to 300 metres, its rotating bezel made it easy to calculate dive times, thanks to its multicoloured decompression scale.

“King of Waterproof”, “The Watch of the Captain”: these slogans from the 1980s reveal the established reputation and long-standing expertise of Mido. From the 2000s, the brand introduced a major standard: every Ocean Star features resistance up to a pressure of (at least) 20 bar (200 m/660 ft). The Ocean Star Diver 600, released back in 2019, introduces an extraordinary water-resistance of up to 60 bar (600 m/1968 ft). A superlative high-performance watch, worthy of every acclaim, was chosen to represent the partnership with the breathtaking and unique discipline of cliff diving. Now more than ever, the starfish symbol historically engraved on the back of every Ocean Star celebrates the outstanding performance of each watch in this emblematic collection.

For the first time ever in 39 mm diameter, the Ocean Star 39 is an accomplished combination of subtle details and cutting-edge materials. Mido opted to give movement to its dial thanks to an undulating motif in relief, highlighted by the striking gradient from black to navy blue. Set against this decoration are generous round indexes and hour and minutes hands all featuring white Super-LumiNova®, offering perfect legibility during the day and in darkness. A date window sits at 3 o’clock – a discreet but indispensable everyday tool. On the high-tech black and navy blue aluminium rotating bezel, a luminescent white dot marks the start of the graduation – characteristic of a watch designed to measure diving times. This hypnotising dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.

The caseband and bracelet of the Ocean Star 39 are made from stainless steel – with their polished bevels contrasting with the satin-finished surfaces. The screw-down crown and case back ensure an excellent water-resistance of up to 200 m (20 bars / 660 ft). The bracelet, equipped with a “diver” extension, allows for a multitude of combinations, thanks to an ingenious interchangeability system.

At the heart of the Ocean Star 39 beats a latest generation Swiss movement, the Caliber 72. Equipped with an antimagnetic Nivachron™ balance spring, with a power reserve of up to 72 hours, this movement is both utterly reliable and perfectly suited to the 39 mm diameter of this new Ocean Star.

Three versions are being released to complete this launch: a champagne or black gradient dial on a steel bracelet, but also a full black look – with the Brand’s iconic orange indexes and hands – complemented with a black rubber strap.

A smaller timepiece which takes sports chic to its apex, the Ocean Star 39 celebrates the Ocean Star collection, born 80 years ago from Mido’s expertise in water-resistance.
