inde Werdelin has been chosen as the partner of the NATO Close Protection Unit (“CPU”) for a series of watches specially designed and produced for its members. The CPU is the executive security team that protects NATO’s Secretary General against potential enemy threats.
The Oktopus NATO CPU is also the first confirmed series of the third generation of the brand’s Oktopus dive watch family which Linde Werdelin originally launched in 2009. The first generation had a traditional turning bezel while the second generation was modified with an eight-screw fixed bezel and a moderately changed case design.
The Oktopus case has its origin as an allusion to a submersible carrying life inside a protective purely functional shell. It originally also functioned as a carrier for our diving instrument which decided its angularity. In the generation 3 we have emphasised this to pay homage to its history while also moving it into the future.
Retaining the essential DNA of the Oktopus case, the design and construction has been comprehensively changed for generation 3. It is no exaggeration that every dimension and angle on the case has been modified. The changes make the Oktopus 3 more architecturally and visually striking while also being more streamlined and comfortable to wear.
In addition to the Oktopus NATO CPU, Linde Werdelin will be launching a series called the First Edition of the Oktopus 3 (ref 823). The Oktopus First Edition will only be available by exclusive invitation.
"The Oktopus NATO CPU origins in a straight line from the Oktopus Frogman made in 2014 for the Danish Frogmen, and the 3 Timer Ukraine made in 2022 in support of Ukraine when Russia invaded. When we were asked to make this series, we immediately accepted, partly to be on the right side of history and a proponent for peace, cooperation and democracy," says Jorn Werdelin.
