Hanhart revives rare vintage model 415 ES from the 1960s

Around 60 years ago, the German watchmaker debuted two special features: a chronograph with a bidirectional rotating bezel featuring 60-minute markings and a striking, sporty wing logo that modernised its image. The brand has now rebooted this historic model with today’s technology.

T

he new 415 ES combines the timeless design of the original with modern materials and technologies, remaining true to the brand’s rich history while meeting today’s demands. A classic that continues its history in the present. The 415 ES was first presented in the mid-1960s and was available in various versions. Around 60 years ago, Hanhart introduced two special features for the first time in its history: a chronograph with a bidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute graduations and the striking, sporty wing logo with which the company modernized its external appearance.

Throughout history, there have been many different versions of the 415 ES. Some models, which can be found in historical catalogues, were realised with Dauphine hands. Other versions featured straight hands, similar to the iconic 417 ES. Dials were available in light and dark versions. However, one very special design captivated the Hanhart development team and was revived according to modern manufacturing standards and using the latest materials: the 415 ES with straight hands, tachymeter scale and red hundred scale. The “ES” in the name stands for stainless steel (in German “Edelstahl”), of which the watch’s case is made.

The new 415 ES has a black dial with totalisers at 3 and 9 o’clock. The tachymeter scale on the outer edge of the dial helps to measure speed over a set distance. There is also a red hundredths scale on the dial. To facilitate the management and calculation of work and production times, time is often measured in industrial minutes. In this system, the duration of a period of time is indicated in the decimal system. One minute is therefore divided into 100 units. This function is particularly important in industrial and technical applications.

The dial of the 415 ES bears the historic “wing logo”, a symbol that Hanhart has used as an official logo since the 1960s to rejuvenate and modernise its appearance. This is the first time in over 40 years that this special logo has been used on a Hanhart wristwatch.

With today’s new edition, Hanhart has revived the model in a historically correct size of 39 mm diameter, while retaining the charm of the original watch from the 1960s. The aim of the new edition was not to create an exact copy of the old watch, but to retain the classic design and equip it with modern materials and a new movement to give the watch state-of-the-art technology. The 415 ES thus represents a bridge between the past and the present, with which Hanhart once again demonstrates its innovative strength.

The bi-directional ceramic bezel with 60 precision clicks ensures accurate settings. Inside, the 415 ES uses the proven Sellita SW 510 M to ensure reliable and accurate timekeeping. The case is also anti-magnetic, providing additional protection against external influences. On top it is shockproof, featuring Hanhart movement damping as an additional layer of shock protection, ensuring reliable performance even in rugged environments. The chronograph has a manual winding mechanism and two symmetrical pushers for easy operation. The watch is water-resistant to 10 bar / 10 ATM. In addition, the Super-LumiNova X1 coated indices, numerals and hands are easy to read even in poor lighting conditions.

The Hanhart standard with regard to the accuracy of the watches is as unique as the watches themselves. Each individual movement is tested and adjusted by excellently trained watchmakers at the Hanhart manufactory in Gütenbach. The Hanhart specifications for rate accuracy are 0 to +8 seconds per day on average over 6 positions. This corresponds to the same deviation as +/-4 seconds, but Hanhart does not allow a minus second in the main positions. The German virtue of punctuality dictates that wearers of Hanhart watches should not be late because of the timekeeping device on their wrist. In addition, a maximum delta of 10 seconds is permitted between the positions.

As a pioneer in the development of wrist chronographs and stopwatches, Hanhart has played an outstanding role in the history of the German watch industry. With a passion for technical inventiveness, Hanhart continues to set the highest standards for itself today and is guided by the following maxims: precision and reliability, perfect readability and simple, safe operation as well as maximum robustness. Since 1882, the watch manufacturer has been producing timepieces that combine perfection with unmistakable design. Development, production and sales of the mechanical masterpieces are based in Gütenbach in the Black Forest.
