Byrne introduces a novel complication in the Byrne Star

The haute horlogerie indie brand unveils its most intricate calibre yet, marking a major leap in its technical achievements. Paying tribute to a 200-year-old pocket watch, it features a World Timer and a groundbreaking Time Flow complication, offering a new way to show the passage of time.

T

hree calibres in just three years. Since its foundation in 2022, Byrne Watch has developed one calibre per year, a remarkable feat that results today in the unveiling of its third movement, demonstrating the brand’s unwavering commitment to excellence in watchmaking. Celebrating its 3-year journey at Geneva watch week 2025, Byrne introduces a new milestone with a world-first and the brand’s most advanced timepiece. Imagined with passion by John Byrne and crafted in Switzerland, this exceptional creation epitomises Byrne’s relentless pursuit of innovation.

Inspired by a 200-year-old historical pocket watch from Vacheron Constantin, the Byrne Star features:

  • Hour & minute indication
  • At its centre, a world timer disk displaying 12 locations/time zones
  • At its cardinal points, a groundbreaking gyro-complication tracks the four key moments of a day on Earth every 6 hours, across 16 major cities

The Byrne Star isn’t just a watch; it’s a milestone; it’s a statement. With this watch, Byrne takes a giant leap into the upper echelons of Haute Horlogerie, cementing its place as a powerhouse in the world of independent watchmaking.

Launched in August 2022, Byrne Watch is the brainchild of Claire Cohen, a luxury & fashion expert, and John Byrne, a visionary designer and watchmaker. Named after John, the brand embodies his boundless creativity and their shared passion. John leads the design and R&D, pushing watchmaking boundaries, while Claire ensures impeccable craftsmanship and customer experience. Together, they’re redefining luxury with non-conventional, pioneering timepieces crafted with vision and love.

The Byrne Star watch draws its inspiration from an extraordinary historical timepiece – a Vacheron Constantin pocket watch that John Byrne restored over 20 years ago. Purchased in India, this rare watch, believed to have belonged to a Pope, features an enlarged map of Italy with intricate details, making it a truly unique artefact. John, a watch restorer, meticulously restored the watch in 2005, carefully recreating the lost champlevé enamel sections, including an entire top section at noon. The watch exudes special energy and aura, with its design and craftsmanship radiating a deep connection to Italy – a country of great personal significance to John. His restoration work caught the attention of Vacheron Constantin, and the piece was eventually acquired by their museum. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of this masterpiece, John created the Byrne Star, a modern homage to this Pope watch. A tribute to craftsmanship and history, the Byrne Star encapsulates John’s lifelong passion for innovation and reverence for the watchmaking heritage.

The Byrne Star introduces two distinct complications: a classic 12-hour Worldtimer and a groundbreaking Time Flow gyro-complication, a truly innovative feature that John spent years refining. Through countless calculations and meticulous development, this new complication redefines how we perceive time, offering not just function, but a deeper, emotional connection to each passing moment of a day in the world.

The Byrne Star features:

  • A 12-hour Worldtime displaying 12 locations on a central disk, with an elegant display that makes tracking time zones simple.
  • Worldtime locations, with a 2-hour time difference between each: London, Athens, Abu Dhabi, Dhaka, Macau, Brisbane*, Midway*, Juneau, La Paz, Havana, Brasilia, and Azores. *Brisbane and Midway are indicated in gold on the disk to show the reading sequence.
  • A world first: the very original “Time Flow” complication, showcased on the signature gyro dial with four rotating cubes at the cardinal points, each showing a different phase of the day – morning, noon, evening, and night – offering a dynamic, visual and synchronised representation of time as it unfolds across the globe and going further than just a simple day/night AM/PM complication.

Time flow locations:

  • 12 o’clock (Hanoi, Paris, Rome, New York)
  • 3 o’clock (Male, Tokyo, Baku, Rio)
  • 6 o’clock (Taipei, Hong Kong, Oslo, Bern)
  • 9 o’clock (Doha, Sydney, Noumea, Dubai)

Imagine arriving in Brisbane on a Monday morning, with a call scheduled for Rome in the afternoon, and later trying to catch an NBA game in New York. For moments like these, you need a Worldtimer. But Byrne doesn’t stop there. The brand adds a poetic twist with an entirely new complication: the moments of the day, brought to life through its signature and patented gyro dial, offering a dynamic, ever-changing view of time as it unfolds around the world.

Indeed, the Byrne Star features a gyro dial that divides the day into 4 phases:

  • Early Morning: The first light of the day, as the night fades away, is a soft, light sky blue –symbolising renewal and the start of a productive day.
  • Noon: A vibrant turquoise blue, representing the peak of energy and activity.
  • Evening: Dusk. The transitional period between day and night, when light gently fades but some illumination remains, is represented by a deep, dark blue, evoking relaxation and introspection.
  • Night: A starry sky colour, symbolising rest and stillness, reflecting the quiet and peaceful nature of the night (and a nod to the piece’s name).

The cubes on the dial, representing 16 cities that are dear to John, don’t provide specific hours but rather the moment of the day in those locations. Each city holds a special meaning for John, tied to personal stories, encounters, moments of awe, or places where he has lived and experienced life.

In today’s fast-paced world, we’ve become overly reliant on precision at the expense of mindfulness. This watch challenges the traditional construct of timekeeping and offers a more harmonious approach to the passage of time. It’s a tool not just to track time but to live it more intentionally. Whether worn by an executive, an artist, or a dreamer, this watch brings a unique perspective to the wrist – a conversation starter and a companion for those who view time as more than just numbers. The DNA of Byrne is to continuously reinterpret and twist all the great watchmaking standards, offering an innovative vision of the art of horology.

At Byrne, the style is sport-chic – sleek, with barrel-shaped cases that exude a casual yet refined vibe.

However, with the Byrne Star, Byrne is taking a more classic approach. This time, the brand pays tribute to a historic piece with a brand-new case design: a completely reimagined 38 mm case that’s 2mm thinner, more rounded, and crafted from Grade 5 titanium for a lightweight yet robust feel. The result is a timepiece that blends modern innovation with timeless elegance, staying true to the brand’s essence while elevating its sophistication.

The rhodium dial is sunburst-finished, adding depth and texture.

The hands, thin and open-worked, in yellow gold – an homage to the sun but also to the Vacheron Constantin pocket watch – enhance readability as they sweep across the dial.

The watch is paired with a luxurious Double Crocodile strap, featuring a top layer of navy blue Alligator Louisiana ’Grandes Ecailles’ with hand-stitched ’saddle’ seams, and a smooth, small-scale Alligator leather on the back, all in a rich blue colour that adds a striking contrast to the timepiece.

Much like the wisdom of Yoda, the Byrne Star operates on a simple truth: innovation isn’t about effort, it’s about execution. With its groundbreaking design and unparalleled complications, Byrne has redefined the art of watchmaking – there is no middle ground.

John Byrne himself affectionately calls this creation his ’Star World’, a nod to Star Wars and the watch’s role in charting new territories in timekeeping. A watch that doesn’t try to follow trends, but instead sets them, the Byrne Star is the ultimate embodiment of commitment to excellence, where there is no compromise, only mastery.
