Mido revamps Commander 1959 with pixel-powered retro flair

The Swiss heritage brand injects fun and daring energy into its iconic Commander 1959, featuring a vibrant and luminescent pink-and-blue pixel dial that nods to the square digital-age geometry. This vintage-inspired 37 mm edition pairs retro elements with the high-performance Calibre 80.

T

he Commander 1959 is iconic enough to embrace the most daring of ideas. Mido has reinvented its face in an explosion of coloured “pixels”, symbols of high-definition precision, and of a resolutely innovative vision. Pink, blue and, of course, luminescent, this vibrant interplay of squares gives the Commander 1959’s unique dial a surprising twist. A playful aesthetic that combines perfectly with the charming retro codes and exceptional automatic Calibre 80 of this irresistible model.

The geometry of pixels truly symbolises the digital revolution. Fun and daring, the Pixel Art style is the quirky embodiment of this universe. This time, its playfulness lights up the dial of a cult watch with a powerful identity: the Commander 1959. A myriad of squares in shades of blue and pink pop against the black background of the dial. At night, there is a surprise in store thanks to Mido’s signature phosphorescence. The coloured Super-LumiNova comes alive to create a whole new face. The roundness of the case and its wide opening onto the dial guarantees the perfect readability that is the collection’s signature.

This model is inspired by the original Commander, which the brand has been producing continuously since 1959. Retro elements such as the Milanese mesh bracelet and acrylic crystal create a striking contrast with the contemporary dial. The fully polished monocoque case – the pinnacle of water-resistance at the time – has a versatile diameter of 37 mm, topped by a minimalist bezel. Its mechanical heart beats to the rhythm of Mido’s watchmaking expertise, thanks to the ultra-reliable and innovative Calibre 80, fitted with a non-magnetic Nivachron™ balance spring. A new version of the legend is born: a joyful fusion of past and future, and proof of its ability to transcend time.

The face of the timeless Commander 1959 has been transformed into a 21st century phenomenon. The meticulous arrangement of pixels printed on the dial’s black background creates a geometric cloud. Even in the dark, the watch reveals its playful, luminous pink and blue face. The display remains clearly readable, enhanced by the brilliance of the diamond-cut hands and polished indexes. Natural colour Super-LumiNova on the hour and minute hands and on the 12 dots around the polished flange ensures optimum readability, even at night.

The monocoque case of this watch, in fully polished stainless steel, evokes the softness of a pebble. It is topped by a slim, streamlined bezel. The lines extend to the iconic Milanese mesh bracelet, which is extremely comfortable and supple. The acrylic crystal hot-stamped with the Mido logo is another retro touch which adds vibrant reflections to this special edition.

At the heart of the Commander 1959 lies the exceptional Calibre 80. Concealed by the case, its oscillating weight is finely decorated with Côtes de Genève and the engraved Mido logo. This component oscillates to the rhythm of the wrist’s movements, “automatically” replenishing the calibre’s energy. Its high level of reliability is ensured by a power reserve of up to 80 hours, and by the Nivachron™ balance spring. This high-tech alloy offers remarkable resistance to magnetism, temperature variations, and shocks. Presented in an exclusive box, this attractive, elegant 1959 Commander is the perfect piece for lovers of exceptional watches.

With its pyrotechnic explosion of pink and blue pixels and irresistible vintage lines, the new 1959 Commander offers a thrilling way to experience time.
